History

Our house was founded in 1902 by August Kussmann in Cologne. The company was engaged in the production of cast signs.

When Josef Berkenhoff joined the company on 01.02.1922, the GbR was founded. Since that time our company has been operating under the name Kussmann & Berkenhoff, since 1992 as GmbH. After the war the company moved to Bergisch Gladbach due to war damages and introduced a new product: the etched metal sign. This change was decisively accompanied by Heinz Berkenhoff.

In 1972 Heinz Berkenhoff developed an etching machine, on the basis of which production continues to this day. The beginnings of automation were consistently further developed and today go hand in hand with acid recycling and cascade rinsing in order to meet the high requirements for environmental protection.
Kurt J. Berkenhoff took over the commercial part in 1983. Since 1990 he has managed the business and led the company into the digital age.

Since 2011, the fourth generation has been represented by Dipl.-Kfm. (FH) Philipp K. Berkenhoff. Since then, digital printing has been put on a new footing and the anodizing system has been adapted to the current needs of our customers.

We have always attached great importance to personal contacts – service-oriented to customers and suppliers.

Type plates made of stainless steel are our speciality. Here we process more than 15 t V2A per year. Aluminium signs, brass signs, foil signs and front panels round off our product range. All our signs are manufactured in certified quality and delivered beyond Germany’s borders. Our customers include not only companies from the mechanical and plant engineering industry, but also from the automotive industry, fittings and pump construction, shipbuilding, the electrical industry, advertising and many more.

Mission statement

As initiator and co-founder of the working group “Pro Metallschild”, we establish our expert status in the production of industrial signs. Here we support the importance of etched industrial signs, the dissemination of information and adapt the technical development to the respective circumstances.

Industrial signs have become an indispensable part of many technical products. They provide the user with important information for use and handling.
